Delicious Dal Curry Designed to Taste

Dal (dhal or daal) Curry is one of the most versatile, healthy, and delicious curries in the Indian cuisine. Dal translates to lentil, and Dal Curry refers to a spiced lentil soup. This mild and nutritious food consists mainly of lentils, tomatoes, chilies, and spices. Sometimes, vegetables such as potatoes and gourds are added. Very few spices are used and the heat level can be adjusted by using more or less dried chilies. It can be made with any kind of lentil; can be thick or thin to serve. It can be made rich with cream and butter or simple by tempering with spices. Simplicity and versatility makes Dal curry one of the most sought after cuisine in most Indian households. This curry is very kid friendly too. It is a great side dish for a vegetarian meal.

Masoor dal or red lentil makes a great choice for a simple dinner because it is both inexpensive and easy to cook. Toor or toovar dal is split and hulled pigeon pea, and tastes like a more flavorful version of yellow split peas. They’re especially popular in South Indian sambar, a lentil soup variety.

Dal tadka, a North Indian variety of Dal Curry, literally translates to lentils with tempering. The lentils are cooked and then tempered with a spicy ghee tempering of cumin seeds, asafetida, dry red chilies, ginger, garlic, onions, tomatoes, and red chili powder.

Dal packs in a great punch of nutrients that is required by our body. They are rich in protein, fiber and iron. They also contain important vitamins and minerals, including foliate, iron, potassium, and zinc. Regular consumption of pulses or lentils will help in weight management, in building healthy body cells and in improving the health of heart.

Pulses are rich in protein and fiber, but have no fat content. Hence, eating pulses gives the right amount of energy and nutrition, but does not pile on the calories. The protein and fiber fill up the stomach and gives a feeling of satiety. Thus, it helps control appetite and prevents overeating.

Proteins, iron and foliate in pulses ensure that cells stay healthy enough for the repair-and-renewal process. The iron reduces the risk of anemia. From immune system to digestion, everything will stay on track with the daily consumption of dal. Pulses are known to be extremely healthy for the heart as it helps reduce bad cholesterol and also reduces blood pressure, thereby reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.

Dal Curry is delicious when served with chapatti. It is equally delicious with plain white rice. Have an authentic experience of Dal curry at Amma’s South Indian restaurant, and choose your combination of eating it with chapatti or with rice.
